Behind the Scenes: Feb ‘20
February might be a short month but at Atlantis it punches well above its weight! This month carried on where January left off, with a very busy few weeks at the Centre. Read on for a selection of highlights from small but mighty February:
Centre Life – ‘clearing up after Ciara and Dennis come to visit‘
Compared to those affected down South, we’re well aware that we got off pretty lightly with the recent storms – but they still left their mark. Sections of the Atlantis roof sustained storm damage, prompting quick action to repair before subsequent weather came in. All repairs have been completed and the roof is weather tight once again.Atlantis in the Community - ’making a difference beyond the centre’It’s been a delight to welcome the Oban Breakers Netball Club as they settle into Atlantis as their new full-court home. Over 20 players regularly attend their Monday night sessions where all are welcome from 7pm.
Claire, Lucy and Natasha visited Rockfield Primary this month for a day and a half of taster dance sessions. Over 250 young people experienced ballet, hiphop and Born to Move across the two days.
We’ve returned the favour and hosted the primary schools at the Centre too this month. The Interschools Athletics Competition run in partnership with Active Schools saw over 160 young people join us, representing 16 teams made up from two cohorts. Pupils from in-town primaries as well as rural schools such as Barcaldine, Lismore and Easdale competed in two qualifying events with the final scheduled for 26th March.
Wacky World filled the Main Hall with their inflatables earlier this month. Over 1000 young people bounced and bungeed their way through the Centre across the two days that the team were in town.
Staff News – ‘the team behind the action’
Six members of the staff team attended Les Mills’ Advance Training this month. This is a leadership training event that helps participants discover models and techniques designed to help tailor their own unique coaching style. Pursuing this particular style of training allows us to offer an increasingly bespoke experience, helping you get what you need the most from Atlantis.
We’re delighted to have Lesley Fraser settling into her new role as Bookings and Admin Officer. Lesley is one of two recent personnel changes with Fiona MacInnes helping Atlantis out with our Pilates offer.
Craig McCorquodale continues to add strings to his bow through his ongoing personal upskilling. This month, Craig completed the training to become a fully qualified swimming teacher – congratulations to him!
Sue Pagan visited Atlantis this month, running two Dementia Friends courses in partnership with Alzheimer Scotland. We’re so grateful for Sue’s time and all events like this that help us learn more about how we can best support those most vulnerable in our community.
And finally, we’re so excited for a number of special staff celebrations coming up. Huge congratulations to Iwan & Lindsey, Kirsty & James and Kevin & Claire all of whom are set to celebrate their weddings in the next wee while. And a special mention to parents-to-be Jonny and Jade who welcome their new arrival in the coming weeks, congratulations!
