Behind the Scenes: Jan ‘20

No sooner have we celebrated the arrival of a new year than we’re looking back on the passing of its first month! The year is off to a flying start here at Atlantis, here are some highlights of how 2020 got underway:

Centre Life – ‘rolling out the green carpet and rowing back to health’
Last year we told you about Atlantis becoming the first pool in Scotland to be awarded the coveted PWTAG poolmark award. We’d like to maintain the high standards that led to us achieving the award so we’ve added a number of projects to our planned maintenance schedule. First up are some works to our Small Pool filtration system. During February we’ll replace the filter itself as well as its glass media content. Don’t worry though, we hope to be mostly working outside normal working hours so that pool opening times are unaffected. Staying poolside, we’ll also be renewing the flooring tiles in the spectator area. Atlantis floors have to endure significant traffic and tell their story of how well-loved our Centre is. The work to the Spectator Area is part of a Centre wide project so watch out for the fresh new look coming soon!
One of the many benefits of being a community run organisation is the flexibility to adapt and change to suit our community’s needs. As part of this, this month we took delivery of three new rowing machines to benefit our Healthy Options and StayActive members. The rowers sit slightly higher than our other machines which make them easier to get on and off.
The technological brain that runs Atlantis behind the scenes has had an upgrade after two of our older computers both failed over the Christmas holiday period. This was the catalyst for a complete IT upgrade throughout the centre.
Plans are also afoot to redevelop the reception area later in the year. General Manager Nick met with the architect earlier this month to progress key elements of the design. Works are hoped to take place in May.
Beth and the Café team took delivery of a new oven and chilled display cabinet this month. The new kit will help to increase capacity and minimise time spent preparing food offsite.

Atlantis in the Community’making a difference beyond the centre’
We were absolutely delighted to host Dunbeg, Achaleven and Kilchrenan primary schools on the swimming and cycling legs of their triathlon fundraiser at the end of the month. 18 pupils took part in an event that raised money for their upcoming outdoor education week away and brought together a range of communities including the Ganavan ParkRun.
Coaches from Oban Fishing and Shooting Club alongside Atlantis archer Kyle Dods hosted Martyn’s Monday Club earlier in the month. The evening ran through a general introduction to archery. It was fantastic to have them with us and to partner with the fantastic work that Martyn’s do.

Staff News – ‘the team behind the action’
Kendra Clark gets the staff team training underway for 2020 as she pursues her RPM Les Mills qualification. With her new qualification Kendra will be able to add her expanded skills on the bike to the fitness team’s ever growing pool of expertise.
Elsewhere the Atlantis management team agreed the 2020 budgets just before Christmas. This paves the way for a wide range of exciting activities and events to come - watch this space!
