Behind the Scenes: September ‘24

September has a habit of rattling through Atlantis at a blistering rate of knots – and this year has been no exception! Read on to find out what the past month has brought down at your community-run leisure centre:

Annual General Meeting ‘a community voice’
We finished off September with our annual general meeting taking pace on the last day of the month. Yes, we know AGMs probably aren’t the most scintillating of news stories – but, as a community organisation, we attach a lot of importance to them. Whilst being an important legal obligation that charities need to carry out each year, AGMs also offer a great opportunity to come together as community, look back on the year that was and make plans for the season to come. AGMs are a public meeting, that means anyone can come along with members voting on various relevant issues. For a community organisation like Atlantis, this means that AGMs provide our community with an opportunity to provide oversight and accountability. So, last month we had our AGM and it was really fun! – a great opportunity to review the previous year and bring everyone up to speed on what’s happening next at Atlantis. Thank you to everyone that came along!

Jonny Brown congratulating Scott Anstruther on his new appointment as Operations Manager

Staff News – ‘the team behind the action’’
We are delighted to congratulate and welcome Scott Anstruther to his new role as Operations Manager! Having already been a part of the Atlantis team as a Duty Manager for the past two and a half years, Scott’s new role will focus on leading and supporting the Duty Manager Team including running regular team meetings to keep everything working as it should. Scott will also be taking care of a host of day-to-day tasks that help keep Atlantis operating smoothly. Congratulations Scott!

Community – ‘what a racquet!’
Hold onto your racquets, we’ve had a very busy month on court! -
Things went national on the badminton court last month as Oban Badminton Club hosted a 4-way challenge between teams from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Barra. This was a highly competitive and very fun event which saw Glasgow eventually triumph as overall winners.
Staying on court but switching sports, Oban Tennis and Squash Club had a busy month of competition too! The club held their gents squash championship and plate matches which were won by Micheal Kelly and Nick Burton respectively. The club also held a tennis fun day at the end of the month as part of their end-of-season celebrations which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
And finally, The Ravens were also on court at the start of the month as part of their annual Squash Boot Camp Weekend.
Phew!

Centre Life – ‘Atlantis gets bigger!’
We’re very excited to announce the addition of a new assessment and treatment room within the Health and Wellbeing Zone here at Atlantis. This versatile space will be available for use by Healthy Options, physiotherapy sessions, private bookings, and the Atlantis team. As such the new facility will help us offer more opportunities to support the community's health needs. Plans are also moving forward for a gym extension which will provide additional space for new equipment, giving members more room to enjoy their workouts in a refreshed environment.
In addition, we are actively working on plans to create new accessible changing rooms for the swimming pool, ensuring a more inclusive experience for all visitors. For our younger visitors, the Soft Play area has recently undergone an internal refurbishment making it even more fun to explore. And by the end of October, our Climb Cube will receive a brand-new flooring system, after an impressive 12 years of heavy use. This will ensure high levels of safety and a more enjoyable climbing experience for everyone.
Stay tuned for more exciting developments as we continue to improve and expand our facilities!
