Behind the Scenes: July ‘24

As our schools rediscover the rhythm of a new term, it’s the perfect time to look back at the whirlwind that was July - a month when Oban was abuzz with holidaymakers, and Atlantis Leisure found itself at the heart of the action. With school out, tourists pouring in, and the sun shining bright, July was a month of non-stop activity at the Centre. Read on to find out what holiday season looked like at your community-run leisure centre:

Centre Life – ‘chillin’ out…’
Even though it was the holidays that didn’t mean a stop to the list of maintenance jobs needing completed. Whilst we might not experience the same high temperatures as our friends in the South, a timely item on July’s job list was the scheduled service of our air conditioning system. Air con is an important tool on a leisure centre’s belt, keeping air regulated and fresh to aid your workout.

And once you’ve completed your workout, what better way to cool off than using our newly refreshed dry changing showers! This project has been a long time in the making so it’s with excitement and no small amount of relief that we got underway these last few weeks. Projects like this are expensive and difficult to fund, so we’ve chunked the whole into manageable bits starting with the female dry-changing area. Work kicked off earlier in the month in the showers, giving the facilities a much-needed freshen up. As and when the charity can afford it, we’ll chip away at this project by moving next door to the gents and we’ll be sure to keep you up to speed throughout.

Staff News – ‘the team behind the action’’
With a very full activity and event programme, the Atlantis life is a busy one. We work hard to meet the varied demand for the Centre but it can be a juggle! Our staff team are the logistical, patient and creative marvel behind making the magic happen and we wanted to take column space to thank them for that. A good example this month was the team’s understanding and flexibility as we rescheduled staff training to accommodate demand for our spaces. It might seem like a small thing but it speaks loudly of Atlantis’ ethos for putting community first – thanks team!

In this edition, we make very special mention of our Kirsty Kennedy as this month she received an award from the Royal Life Saving Society. RLSS have recognised Kirsty’s dedication to water safety with their UK Merit Honour. The award is in recognition of Kirsty’s voluntary work which the charity acknowledges reduces UK and Irish drownings as well as helping everyone to enjoy the water safely. Congratulations Kirsty!

Community – ‘making a difference beyond the Centre’
Throughout the now over 30 year old Atlantis story runs a common thread of partnership. We work closely with a range of local partners and have built a close rapport with the town’s key institutions – this includes our local police. This month, that partnership saw us host some of the team from the police station as they undertook their continued professional training. One part of being a community-run charity means we actively seek collaborations like this which simultaneously help each other out and strengthens our local network.
